In the Classroom - Look What the Students are Doing!
Middle School
May 2012
The 8th graders are currently working on researching an element, which was assigned from science class. They are utilizing PowerPoint to display their research and they will be presenting May 14 and 15th.
The 6-7th graders are working on researching information about a state. They are utilizing PowerPoint to present their research. The presentations will begin the week of May 7th.
April 2012
The students are learning presentation skills and how to utilize PowerPoint as a presentation tool.
March 2012
They are working on improving their typing skills. They are also using their time in the Computer Lab to type their research paper.
February 2012
The students are learning how to create line and column charts through Excel. The have and will continue to have opportunities to type and to research their Science Fair Research paper in the Computer Lab. The students are continuing to work on their typing skills through Type to Learn. There will be a top row keyboard Quiz on Friday, March 2nd. The next Quiz on the bottom row will be possibly Friday, March 16th.
January 2012
The students will research a topic and practice typing a short research paper. They will be graded on citing their sources and typing their paper in the correct format. This will prepare them for the Science Fair Research Paper.

December 2011
The students continue to work on typing research papers. They have typed and practiced citing bibliography sources. A hands-on test was given before Christmas Break.
November 2011
The students are inserting clip art and practice resizing. They are also working on find & replace and creating lists in Word.. They are learning how to type research papers and how to cite the work on a bibliography page.
October 2011
The students collected 10 pictures of family members and favorite hobbies/interests that will be used to put together their personal story. They are learning to copy files to an external device (flash drive). They will be importing their pictures into Windows Movie Maker to create a short movie.
They are also researching information on the internet and compiling a table using Microsoft Word. At the beginning of the quarter, they will be learning to type a research paper and cite sources.
September 2011
Currently the students are working on Microsoft Word learning basic document functions such as margins, footer, line spacing and typeface styles and sizes. They are learning how to type business letters and envelopes.
5th Grade
May 2012
The students are learning how to utilize PowerPoint. Their presentations will be on the topic of the three branches of government.
April 2012
The students were introduced to the basics of using PowerPoint.
March 2012
The students continue to learn how to type a research paper. They will finish their bird project.
February 2012
The students researched birds on the following web sites: http://www.nhest.org/birdguid.html and www.wild-bird-watching.com/birds.html. They practiced taking that information and typed it in a research format. They are continuing to work on typing skills. There will be a home row Quiz on Thursday, March 8th. The next quiz will be on March 22nd - top row.
January 2012
The students will practice researching a topic and typing a short research paper. The students will continue to learn typing skills through Type to Learn 4 program.
December 2011
The students were given two characters to research from the book: Wrinkle in Time. They also have been practicing typing with the new program, Type to Learn 4.
November 2011
The students are continuing to work on www.whitehouse.gov. They are typing a paragraph summarizing what they learned and how to type a one-page research paper.
October 2011
The students are researching information on www.whitehouse.gov. They will be practicing copying and pasting as well as creating a research paper.
September 2011
The children have been learning basic functions in Microsoft Word. They are practicing saving their files on the network. They are reviewing the different font styles and sizes
4th Grade

The students will continue to practice typing in Type to Learn 4. They also researched one thing about Thomas Jefferson and one thing about Daniel Boone. They found an image on the internet of Thomas and Daniel and practiced saving that image. They typed a sentence or two in Word and inserted their image.

The students are having fun designing a flyer looking for a lost dog. They are practicing changing the font color and sizes and inserting clip art.

The students are practicing using a variety of font styles by editing a flyer. They are also practicing signing on and saving to the DCCS network.

Reminder about Computer Use in the DCCS Lab

There is no right of privacy from system administrators. Any use of school computers is accessible to school personnel and the material will be evaluated as to its appropriateness.
The use of school computers to access personal email is prohibited.
The use of school computers and the Internet is a privilege and may be revoked at any time. In order to enhance student learning and promote a technological savvy student, DCCS provides computer classes with internet availability. DCCS believes that the Internet has much to offer students with its wide variety of resources. It is our goal to educate students about efficient, ethical, and appropriate use of the resources. Within the context of our mission statement, the Internet connection will be used to meet the goals in our curriculum.
The internet user is held responsible for his/her actions whenever using the Internet. Unacceptable uses of the Internet will result in the suspension or revoking of these privileges. Some examples of unacceptable use include but are not limited to:
- vandalizing the data of another user
- wasteful use of resources
- violating the spirit of the DCCS mission statement
